When advisers to the mining industry, Hawcroft, wanted to enhance the timeliness of their risk reports they looked for a multilingual solution that could be easily integrated within their existing risk management system.

As the main independent risk management services provider for the mining industry, Hawcroft’s engineers work all over the world collecting risk data and creating reports using a powerful risk management system developed by Ultimedia.

“We noticed that our field engineers working in remote locations in South America were experiencing delays in creating inspection reports because we use English as our main language for business communications, but it is not always their first language” says Jerry Wallace, Managing Director at Hawcroft Consulting International Group. “We wanted to find a simple, fast, and cost-effective solution to overcome this.”

Eliminating delays in risk report creation

Working closely with the team at Guildhawk, Hawcroft integrated the GAI machine translation API into their risk management system, enabling their engineers to instantly collaborate in both English and Latin American Spanish.

As a result, field engineers can now securely translate confidential data from English into their native language. They can also use Spanish when inputting risk data because GAI auto translates this into English whenever a report section is saved.

Improving translation precision

An important requirement for Hawcroft was the correct use of industry-specific terminology in translations. It was critical that specialist terms such as “tailings”, “waste dump”, and “blasting material” were translated accurately.

To achieve this, a custom GAI glossary was built containing their preferred terms in both English and Spanish. These terms seamlessly integrate into subsequent translations, guaranteeing precision in all future work.

Since integrating GAI within their risk management system productivity has increased, and language differences are no longer an issue. Audit trails also enable data to be reviewed, saved, and shared in either language. On average two weeks’ time is saved to issue translated draft reports to clients.

“GAI has removed the language barriers that led to unnecessary delays in production of our survey reports. Risks are managed much more quickly, and our engineers have been freed from the burden, and cost, of manual translation,” says Jerry. “Auto-translation has also led to significant improvements in the turnaround time for reports. This has been a real gamechanger for us.”
