“GAI’s ability to create domain specific language vocabularies that produce precise results makes it stand out from other solutions”.

As one of the largest and most respected construction firms in Asia, Gammon Construction — a joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Jardine Matheson — has built a reputation for delivering complex, multidisciplinary projects.

Known for their innovative use of technologies like Building Information Modelling (BIM), smart IoT and AI enabled digital solutions and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), Gammon places a strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental health and safety in all aspects of its project delivery.

When the company sought to transform its safety reports into actionable insights, they turned to Guildhawk, a global leader in language solutions, data analytics, and AI development, to help them achieve their vision.

Turning multilingual data into actionable insights

To address this challenge, Gammon sought to introduce cutting-edge technology to automate the translation, labelling, and analysis of their safety data.

“At Gammon we developed an in-house digital application to conduct dynamic risk assessments and collect safety observations via a mobile device enabled chat bot from our site-based managers, engineers and supervisor. It is vital that we properly review the quality and content of the input to these risk assessments and safety observations to ensure we are properly briefing our workforce on the risks involved and identifying areas for improvement to mitigate potential safety issues in the future.”

Explains Paul Evans, CTO at Gammon Construction.

“The challenge we faced was turning this multilingual data into insights we could act on more quickly. With their unique combination of award-winning expertise in language solutions, data analytics, and AI, Guildhawk was the ideal partner to help us transform our operations,” adds Evans.

Building a domain-specific translation engine with GAI

In close collaboration with Gammon’s digital innovation teams, Guildhawk developed a customised machine translation engine powered by Guildhawk AI (GAI). This engine was specifically trained to translate Chinese safety reports into English with high precision, leveraging the GAI domain-specific proprietary datasets.

The process involved creating specialist language vocabularies and glossaries tailored to the construction industry, ensuring consistent and accurate translations. By automating the translation and labelling of safety reports, the solution significantly reduced the time and effort required for manual processing.

Enhancing safety with risk analysis tools

To further improve safety operations, Guildhawk developed a risk analysis tool that assigns a descriptive adequacy score to each incident logged in Gammon’s app.

“The output from this tool will help our site safety officers quickly identify incidents that present a higher risk,” says Evans. “The purpose of automating the translation and labelling our safety reports is to empower our managers and supervisors to spend more time on-site, actively keeping workers safe.”

A safer, smarter future

Gammon Construction’s partnership with Guildhawk exemplifies how innovative technology can transform operations and improve safety outcomes. By automating the translation, labelling, and analysis of multilingual safety data, Gammon targets to streamline its processes and most importantly empower its teams to focus on what matters most — keeping workers safe and preventing future incidents.

“GAI’s ability to create domain specific language vocabularies that produce precise results makes it stand out from other solutions,” says Paul Evans. “It’s not just an AI tool — it’s a trusted partner in our mission to improve safety and efficiency.”
